pION INC. launches the RainbowPLUS, an extended spectral range in situ fiber-optic UV detection system, for use in the spectral range 202720 nm

pION INC. announces the launch of its RainbowPlus fiber-optic detection system. The RainbowPlus has been updated with solarization-resistant fibers throughout the optical path, allowing detection of UV light down to 202 nm. The incorporation of UV/vis spectrometer modules allows the instrument to detect light up to 720 nm.

pIONs highly successful Rainbow instrument, which has always used Zeiss MMS spectrometers because of their high quality photodiode array detectors, outperforms CCD-based instruments. Additional upgrades in the RainbowPLUS include faster sampling rates of only 1 s for all channels. The RainbowPLUS utilizes 68 dip-type UV probes with solarization-resistant fibers to quantitate drug release from solid dosage forms. These probes are suspended in the dissolution vessel at the USP sampling position. Constructed of corrosion-resistant stainless steel, the probes have easily interchangeable quartz mirror tips with path lengths of 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 mm. As compared with other systems on the market, the interchangeable tips eliminate the need for dedicated probes for each path length. The probe tips, when oriented correctly, prevent solids buildup and bubble entrapment. The RainbowPLUS comes with the method development software Indigo, which offers the flexibility researchers want. For the regulated environment, SmartWare® software is both easy to operate and 21 CFR part 11 compliant.

"Our customers requested extended-spectral-range capability in the Rainbow, and were happy to now provide an instrument that meets those needs. In our own research, we commonly see the need for the extended-range detection both towards the lower and the higher wavelengths. Now were able to see the full UV profiles of doxorubicin, phenazopyridine, and rhodamine B, for example, where the compounds UV spectrum extends well beyond the 390 nm region," explains Dr. Alex Avdeef, pIONs Chief Scientific Officer and President.

pION has been granted U.S. and foreign patents on the dynamic data acquisition and presentation along with a patent for hollow-shaft measurement. The data can be collected without creating hydrodynamic artifacts that may negatively influence dissolution measurements.

ERWEKA Launches RoboDis®

Heusenstamm, April 15 2008

At this years Analytica in Munich, Germany, ERWEKA has launched its new RoboDis®, which is designed for the fully automated performance of up to 20 dissolution tests according to USP, EP and JP. Unlike conventional automated systems, RoboDis® handles two 8-station dissolution testers based on a 3-dimensional robot arm, which significantly increases flexibility and throughput.

The system has been developed in close cooperation with Bayer HealthCare in Leverkusen, Germany. It therefore reflects state-of-the-art operational know-how acquired in over 15 years of process optimization and automation in method development and quality control laboratories.

Under the current agreement, the first RoboDis system with fibre-optic analysis will become operational at Bayer HealthCares Berlin site. "Our extensive tests in the past months have shown that we are not dealing with a prototype anymore. RoboDis is now ready to become part of our day-to-day operations" says Dr. Kerstin Pauli, Head of Dissolution Testing within Global Pharmaceutical Development at Bayer HealthCare. The implementation of further systems supporting HPLC analytics are currently under negotiation.

"RoboDis is the consequent next step in pushing innovation in dissolution testing. We are confident, that RoboDis will set a new benchmark and be widely acknowledged by all major players in this field" says Christian G. Mueller, Managing Director of ERWEKA.
